India Post GDS Recruitment 2026: Quick Intro

The Department of Posts has announced 23,757 Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) vacancies under the GDS Online Engagement Schedule-II, July 2026 recruitment, released on 20 August 2026. The vacancies cover Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM), and Dak Sevak posts across 23 postal circles. Candidates who have passed Class 10 can begin One-Time Registration (OTR) from 31 August 2026, while the online application window will remain open until 21 September 2026.

The Department of Posts operates one of India's largest rural networks of postal and financial services through its Branch Post Offices. Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) play a key role in keeping this network functional, handling duties such as mail delivery, postal services, and India Post Payments Bank-related transactions in rural and remote areas.

This is the 2nd GDS recruitment cycle of 2026. The Schedule-I recruitment earlier this year offered around 28,700 vacancies, and the subsequent merit lists saw very high cut-offs in several postal circles, with General-category cut-offs exceeding 97% in some cases, while several divisions of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh recorded cut-offs close to full marks, highlighting the exceptionally high level of competition in some circles.

Vacancy Details

The 23,757 vacancies are distributed across 23 postal circles. The complete category-wise and circle-wise consolidated vacancy distribution is provided below:

Note: The division-wise vacancy details, which provide a more detailed breakdown than the circle-level figures, will be published separately on the official GDS portal once the registration process begins. Candidates should check the portal for the division-wise vacancies before making their preferences. (At ApnaUpdates.com, we will continue to provide the latest updates related to this recruitment, including important notices and subsequent developments. Candidates can bookmark this page and check back regularly for updates)

Application Fee

The application fee for this recruitment is Rs.100, payable through Debit Card, Credit Card, Net Banking, or UPI. Female candidates, SC/ST candidates, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and Transwomen candidates are exempted from the application fee and can submit their applications without making any payment.

Note: Once paid, the application fee is non-refundable under any circumstances, including if the application is later rejected during scrutiny for not meeting the eligibility requirements. Candidates should therefore check the age, local-language, and other eligibility conditions for their chosen division carefully before making the payment. This can help avoid paying the fee for an application that may ultimately be found ineligible.

Age Limit

The minimum age to apply is 18 years and the maximum is 40 years, calculated as on 21 September 2026, the closing date for application submission. Relaxation in the upper age limit is available as follows:

Educational Qualification

The basic educational requirement for GDS recruitment is a Class 10 pass certificate from a board recognised by the Central or State Government, with passing marks in Mathematics and English. Candidates should note that a certificate described only as an β€œequivalent” qualification from an unrecognised board will not satisfy the prescribed requirement. The qualification must be from a recognised Secondary School Examination board.

**Two additional eligibility conditions apply alongside the Class 10 qualification:
1. Candidates must have studied the prescribed local language of the postal circle up to at least Class 10. The required language varies by circle and, in some cases, by specific areas within a state.
2. Special provisions apply in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Goa, and Nagaland, where knowledge of certain specified tribal or regional languages may be accepted through a certificate issued by the respective State Government, even if the candidate did not formally study that language in school.

Note: Candidates must have basic computer knowledge and the ability to ride a bicycle and these are generally confirmed through a signed undertaking rather than a separate test. Candidates must also have an independent source of income, as GDS engagement is structured as a part-time role and is not intended to be the candidate's sole source of livelihood.

Selection Process

There is no written examination or interview for this recruitment. Selection is based entirely on a system-generated merit list, prepared from the candidate's Class 10 board examination percentage, calculated up to 4 decimal places.

Note: If the Class 10 marksheet contains grades instead of marks, the system converts the grades into marks using the prescribed 9.5 multiplication factor. Candidates only need to enter the grades exactly as mentioned on their certificate; the conversion is handled by the system.

In case of a tie in the merit score, the department follows a prescribed tie-breaking sequence i.e., the older candidate, based on date of birth, is ranked higher, followed by the specified order of category and gender combinations as laid down in the recruitment rules.

After the merit list is prepared, shortlisted candidates undergo physical verification of their original documents at the concerned Division Office. This is a document-authentication stage, not an interview or assessment round. The purpose is to verify the authenticity of the Class 10 marksheet, category certificates, and other required documents and no additional performance-based assessment is conducted at this stage.

Salary, Job Location, and Service Conditions

GDS remuneration is provided through Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) rather than a regular government pay scale. The TRCA includes a 3% annual increase, along with Dearness Allowance (DA) as revised by the Government from time to time. Post-wise TRCA details are provided below

The GDS role generally involves 4 to 5 hours of duty per day under GDS Rule 3A, rather than the full-day schedule associated with regular government employment. GDS candidates are also required to have an additional source of income to support their household.

GDS postings remain within the postal circle and division selected by the candidate, with specific residence conditions depending on the post:
> Branch Postmaster (BPM): Must arrange accommodation for the Branch Post Office at their own cost and reside in the same village.
> Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM): Must reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned post office.
> Dak Sevak: Must fulfil the prescribed residence requirement linked to the assigned post office.

Note: Candidates considering a BPM post should therefore understand that the role involves more than accepting employment, it also requires arranging and funding suitable accommodation for the Branch Post Office and residing in the specified village.

GDS employees are covered by GDS Gratuity and the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme, along with Dearness Allowance on TRCA. These benefits are provided under the separate framework governing GDS engagement. Candidates should note that GDS positions are not equivalent to regular Central Government posts in terms of pay, benefits, or service conditions. They are governed by the GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, and not the standard civil service rules applicable to regular Central Government employees

How to Apply

  1. Visit the official GDS Online Engagement Portal at indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement.
  2. Complete One-Time Registration between 31 August and 19 September 2026, using an active mobile number and email ID not linked to any other candidate's registration.
  3. Note the system-generated registration number and password sent to your mobile number for future login.
  4. Log in and open the online application form under the GDS Online Engagement Schedule-II section.
  5. Fill in board and educational details, then select your preferred postal division and post preferences based on the vacancies shown for your local language and category.
  6. Upload your recent photograph and signature in the prescribed format, size and dimensions.
  7. Pay the application fee, if applicable, within 10 minutes of starting the payment process, without closing or refreshing the window.
  8. Review the complete form through the preview option, then submit before 5:00 PM on 21 September 2026.

Note: One important deadline candidates should not overlook is that One-Time Registration (OTR) closes on 19 September 2026, while the final application deadline is 21 September 2026. Candidates who do not complete their OTR by 19 September will not be able to submit the application, even though the overall application window remains open until 21 September. It is therefore advisable to complete the registration well before the OTR deadline.

Required Documents and Important Instructions

Candidates do not need to upload supporting documents while submitting the application. Only the photograph and signature are required at the application stage. However, shortlisted candidates should keep the following documents ready for physical document verification:
1. Class 10 marksheet

2. Valid identity proof
3. Date of birth proof
4. Relevant category certificate, wherever applicable
5. Medical fitness certificate issued by a Government hospital or health centre.

Note: The medical fitness certificate is compulsory for every shortlisted candidate, irrespective of their category.

A few important instructions and application requirements deserve particular attention:

1. The photograph must be recent, taken against a plain background, and meet the prescribed 30-100 KB file size and 4:5 aspect ratio requirements.
2. The signature should be a scanned copy made on white paper, within the prescribed 20-100 KB file size and 5:2 aspect ratio. Old scanned photographs, selfies, or typed signatures may lead to rejection during application scrutiny.
3. The candidate's name, father's name, mother's name, and date of birth should match the Class 10 certificate exactly. Any discrepancy may result in cancellation, even after selection.
4. Candidates should not create multiple or duplicate registrations using altered details. Such violations may lead to cancellation of candidature at any stage, including after engagement.
5. Candidates should remain cautious of fraudulent calls. The Department of Posts has stated that it doesn't directly call applicants regarding their GDS status. Any such call should therefore be treated with suspicion and verified through official channels.

Conclusion

We hope the information provided above has helped you understand the GDS recruitment process clear and concisely. So, now it is important to note that application window closes at 5:00 PM on 21 September 2026, and the Department of Posts has made it clear that no extension will be granted for technical issues on the closing day. Therefore, eligible candidates are advised to complete their registration and application well in advance, allowing enough time to verify the selected postal circle, division, local-language requirement, and other details before final submission.

Since selection is based entirely on the Class 10 marks used to prepare the merit list, there is no written examination or separate preparation stage after applying. Candidates should instead focus on getting the application details correct from the beginning. Before final submission, carefully verify your postal circle and division preference, ensure the photograph and signature meet the prescribed specifications (provided above in the 'Important Instructions' section) and make sure all personal details match the Class 10 certificate exactly.

Candidates should regularly check the official GDS Online Engagement Portal www.indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement for the merit list, physical verification schedule, and other recruitment updates after the application window closes. The Department of Posts communicates important updates through the official portal, SMS, and registered email, so candidates should monitor all three regularly. (You can also bookmark this page for quick reference and follow our Telegram and WhatsApp channels to receive important recruitment updates and notifications without missing any major announcement)
