Indian Railways has opened 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) positions under CEN 01/2026, spread across 21 Railway Recruitment Boards and multiple railway zones. This is a single-post recruitment, so every vacancy belongs to the ALP cadre. The eligibility crux: candidates need a 10th pass plus an ITI/diploma/degree in specified engineering or technical disciplines. Age bracket is 18 to 30 years (as on 01.07.2026), with standard relaxations for reserved categories. The selection runs through CBT-1, CBT-2 (with a qualifying trade-specific Part B), Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), and a medical examination. There is no interview. Applications are online only, opening on 15.05.2026.
The medical standard for ALP is strict, classified as A-1. Candidates who have undergone LASIK or any corrective eye surgery are not eligible. This single clause eliminates a significant number of otherwise qualified applicants every cycle.
About the Recruiting Authority
Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) are autonomous bodies under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. There are 21 RRBs across the country, each handling recruitment for its designated railway zones. For this CEN, a candidate can apply to only one RRB and must indicate zone/railway unit preference under that chosen RRB. The selection, allotment, and posting are handled by the respective Zonal Railway.
Recruitment Overview
Vacancy Distribution: RRB and Zone-wise
The 11,127 vacancies are distributed across 21 RRBs covering multiple railway zones. Below is the complete breakdown.
Important Note: ExSM (Ex-Servicemen) vacancies are included within the total, not separate. Vacancies are provisional and may increase or decrease.
The largest concentrations are under RRB Mumbai (CR zone, 1,078 vacancies), RRB Secunderabad (ECoR, 824), RRB Bhubaneshwar (ECoR, 801), and RRB Ranchi (SER, 745). Candidates choosing less competitive RRBs in smaller zones may face a relatively different applicant density, but there is no guarantee of lower cut-offs since candidate distribution is unpredictable.
⚠️ Alert: You Can Choose Only ONE RRB, and It Cannot Be Changed
Once you select an RRB and complete account creation, the chosen RRB cannot be modified. Your mobile number, email ID, and chosen RRB are locked at the "Create an Account" stage itself. If you pick the wrong RRB, you cannot correct it later. Multiple applications to different RRBs will result in rejection of all applications and a permanent debarment from future RRB and RRC exams.
Application Fee
- Payment through internet banking, debit/credit cards, or UPI only.
- No offline or cash payment option exists.
- Applications without the prescribed fee will be summarily rejected. No representation against such rejection will be entertained.
- Refund applies only to candidates who actually appear in CBT-1.
Before You Apply - 3 Things to Verify Before Paying the Fee:
- Confirm your RRB choice is final. It is non-changeable after account creation.
- Verify your educational qualification matches Annexure-A of the CEN. Awaiting final results on the closing date means ineligibility.
- Confirm you have not undergone LASIK or any corrective eye surgery. If you have, paying the fee is wasting money.
Age Limit and Relaxation
Base Age: 18 to 30 years as on 01.07.2026
Date of Birth Range (for Unreserved, no relaxation): Born between 02.07.1996 and 01.07.2008 (both dates inclusive).
Important Note: If eligible for relaxation on more than one ground, only the highest single relaxation applies. Relaxations are not cumulative. SC, ST, and OBC-NCL candidates applying against UR vacancies will not receive any age relaxation.
The date of birth in the application must match exactly with the date recorded in the Matriculation/10th certificate. Any difference at any stage will lead to disqualification. No request for change in date of birth is accepted after submission.
Educational Qualification
Candidates must have already obtained (not awaiting results on the closing date) the prescribed educational/technical qualifications from a recognized Board/University/Institute.
The essential qualifications are detailed in Annexure-A of the notification. The general requirement is:
- 10th class pass (or equivalent) PLUS
- ITI in relevant trade from institutions recognized by NCVT/SCVT OR
- Diploma in Engineering in relevant disciplines (minimum 3 years) from an AICTE-recognized institution OR
- Degree in Engineering in relevant disciplines from an AICTE-recognized university
The specific list of acceptable trades, diplomas, and degree disciplines is given in Annexure-A of the CEN. Candidates must cross-verify their exact trade/discipline against this annexure before applying. A mismatch discovered at document verification stage will result in rejection, regardless of exam performance.
Verification Risk: The notification explicitly states that candidates awaiting final results of the prescribed qualification on or before the closing date are not eligible. "Should NOT apply" is the exact phrase used. This is verified at document verification, and producing a result dated after the closing date voids the candidature.
⚠️ Alert: LASIK and Corrective Eye Surgery Disqualification
The medical standard for ALP is A-1. The notification explicitly states: "Candidates who have undergone LASIK Surgery or any other surgical procedure to correct refractive error, are not eligible for the post of Assistant Loco Pilot." This is non-negotiable and verified during the medical examination. There is no waiver, appeal, or alternative pathway. If you have had corrective eye surgery of any kind, do not apply.
Vision Standards for A-1:
- Distant Vision: 6/6, 6/6 without glasses with fogging test (must not accept +0.5D correction or above)
- Near Vision: Sn 0.6, 0.6 without glasses
- Must pass tests for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision, Night Vision, Mesopic Vision, etc.
Who Should Apply (and Who Shouldn't)
Selection Process
The recruitment follows a four-stage selection process. There is no interview at any stage.
Stage 1: CBT-1 (First Stage Computer Based Test)
- Screening exam only. Marks from CBT-1 are not counted in the final merit.
- Used to shortlist candidates for CBT-2.
- Shortlisting is based on normalized marks and merit within the chosen RRB.
Stage 2: CBT-2 (Second Stage Computer Based Test)
- Comprises two parts: Part A and Part B.
- Part A scores are used for merit ranking.
- Part B is a qualifying test (trade-specific, set by the Directorate General of Training).
- Only candidates who qualify Part B are considered for further stages.
- Shortlisting for CBT-2 is limited to 15 times the vacancies notified against each RRB.
Stage 3: CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test)
- Shortlisted candidates (up to 8 times the vacancies per category) from CBT-2 are called.
- Tests psychological and aptitude parameters essential for loco pilot duties.
- Each test battery/section must be cleared separately.
- It is mandatory to clear each test battery of CBAT separately to qualify.
- Minimum T-score of 42 marks in each test battery is required for all candidates irrespective of community.
- Conducted in English only, with no negative marking.
Stage 4: Document Verification (DV) and Medical Examination (ME)
- Merit list is prepared from combined marks: Part A of CBT-2 (50% weightage) and CBAT scores (50% weightage).
- Candidates called for DV must produce original certificates. No additional time is given.
- Medical examination under A-1 standard is mandatory.
Exam Pattern: CBT-1
Syllabus for CBT-1:
- Mathematics: Number system, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Mensuration, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar and Clock, Pipes and Cistern, etc.

CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test)
Candidates must produce their Self-Screening Medical Declaration Report in the prescribed format (Annexure-VIII A and VIII B) during CBAT, without which they will not be permitted to appear.
For information on CBAT content and practice, candidates can check: RDSO website > Symbols > Traffic and Psychology > Psychology-Candidate's Corner, or https://rdso.indianrailways.gov.in/view_section.jsp?lang=0&id=0,2,456,1831,6116
⚠️ Alert: One Application Per CEN, One RRB Only
Candidates can apply to only one RRB and submit only one online application for this CEN. Submitting more than one application (even with minor changes) to the same RRB, or applying to multiple RRBs, will result in summary rejection of all applications and permanent debarment from all future RRB and RRC examinations. This is enforced through biometric and document cross-checks. There is no second chance or appeal for this violation.
Salary and Benefits
Practical salary context: The in-hand salary for a newly appointed ALP typically ranges between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 38,000 depending on the city of posting and applicable HRA slab. Metro postings yield higher HRA but also higher living costs. The railway pass benefit (free travel) has significant practical value that does not appear in the salary figure.
Selected candidates undergo mandatory training during which only a stipend is paid, not the full salary. During the training period, the candidate is under observation and must meet prescribed standards.
After initial appointment, ALP candidates are posted to the Zonal Railway or Production Unit. There is no claim of right for transfer to another zone. However, the Competent Authority can transfer a railway servant to any establishment within India. No request for transfer to another Railway will be registered until the newly appointed candidate completes at least 5 to 10 years of service.

- Log in and fill the online application form with correct information
- Complete the Self-Screening Medical Declaration (mandatory at the application stage itself, declaring physical and mental fitness standards including speech, hearing, eyesight, no LASIK, pre-existing conditions)
- Capture live photograph as instructed by the application module (no pre-existing photo upload)
- Upload scanned signature and SC/ST certificate (if applicable) as per specifications
- Pay the examination fee through online mode (internet banking, debit/credit card, UPI)
- Submit the application. Acceptance happens only after successful fee payment confirmation via email and SMS.
- Take a printout of the submitted application for your records.
Important Note: Modifications to the application (with a fee of Rs. 250 per occasion, non-refundable) are allowed during the modification window (17.06.2026 to 26.06.2026). However, the mobile number, email ID, and chosen RRB cannot be changed even during modification. If you change community from SC/ST to UR or OBC/EWS, you must pay the fee difference of Rs. 250 in addition to the modification fee.
Important Dates
RRBs shall not be responsible if candidates are unable to submit their application within the last date for any reason. Server rush during the final 2-3 days is historically common across RRB recruitment portals. Applying early is structurally advantageous.
Competition Reality
With 11,127 vacancies, this is one of the larger railway recruitment drives in recent years. However, the ALP post historically attracts a very large applicant pool, often running into lakhs of applications per RRB.
- Effective UR seats across all RRBs: 4,860. For General (Male) candidates without any relaxation, competition for these seats is the most intense.
- OBC-NCL seats: 2,598. OBC candidates also face high competition since OBC-NCL is the second-largest category.
- SC/ST seats: 1,746 and 919 respectively. Relatively lower cut-offs historically, but the applicant pool is still substantial.
- EWS seats: 1,004. A newer category, competition data is still evolving.
The three-stage exam filter (CBT-1 screening, CBT-2 merit, CBAT aptitude) progressively narrows the field. CBAT is the stage where a significant proportion of candidates who clear CBT-2 fail to qualify, because the aptitude test is fundamentally different from academic preparation and tests innate psychological traits relevant to locomotive operation.
Hidden Friction Points in This Recruitment
This section covers practical problems that typically trip up candidates during this specific type of RRB recruitment.
1. Live Photo Capture During Application
Unlike most government job applications where you upload a pre-existing passport photo, this CEN requires a live photograph captured through your webcam or phone camera during the application process. The photo must match your appearance throughout the recruitment (DV, medical, appointment). A mismatch triggers rejection. Specific rules: no cap, no mask, no glasses/spectacles, neutral expression, non-white clothing in dark colours for background contrast, face fully visible and centered.
If the live photo capture fails or produces a poor image, you can retake it before submission. But once submitted, the photo is locked. Candidates in areas with poor internet may face repeated capture failures due to session timeouts.
2. Self-Screening Medical Declaration at Application Stage
This CEN has introduced a self-screening medical declaration at the application stage itself. You must declare conformity with prescribed physical and mental fitness standards including speech, hearing, eyesight (no LASIK), no diabetes, hypertension, and no use of psychoactive substances. Based on your responses, a downloadable medical report is generated, which must be submitted at CBAT. This is signed by a General Physician and Eye Specialist from a Central/State Government Hospital or Medical College only. Getting this medical report completed before CBAT is a logistical step many candidates forget until the last moment.
3. Signature Upload Rejections
The signature specifications are unusually strict. It must be in running handwriting (cursive/joined letters), not in BLOCK, CAPITAL, or DISJOINTED letters. Black ink on white paper only. The resolution, file size (30-60 KB), and dimension requirements are precise. Applications are rejected at any stage if the signature does not meet these specifications. The signature must also match across all stages: examination, DV, medical, and appointment.
4. OBC-NCL Certificate Timing Trap
OBC candidates must produce an OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) certificate issued on or after April 01, 2026, and not later than the closing date of application (14.06.2026). Certificates issued before April 2026 or after the closing date are not accepted. The caste should be listed in the current updated central list of OBCs at ncbc.nic.in. Additionally, at DV, OBC candidates must submit a self-declaration that they do not belong to the creamy layer as on the closing date. Failure to do so converts their reservation claim to Unreserved.
5. EWS Certificate Specifics
EWS candidates must possess an Income and Asset Certificate valid for the Financial Year 2025-26 (the year prior to the year of application submission). The closing date of application falls in 2026, making FY 2025-26 the relevant income year. Certificates for FY 2024-25 or earlier will not be accepted. This catches candidates who obtain their EWS certificate too early.
6. Modification Fee Trap
After final submission, if you want to correct any detail except mobile number, email ID, and chosen RRB, you can do so during the modification window by paying Rs. 250 per modification occasion. If you change community category (e.g., SC/ST to UR), you must pay the exam fee difference (Rs. 250) in addition to the modification fee. The modification window closes on 26.06.2026, and after that, RRBs will not accept any modification requests.
Biggest Rejection Reasons (Based on Official Notification Rules)
- LASIK/corrective eye surgery: Automatic medical disqualification, no exceptions.
- Multiple applications: Submitting to more than one RRB or more than one application to the same RRB results in rejection of all applications plus permanent debarment.
- Date of birth mismatch: Any difference between the application and the 10th certificate leads to disqualification, with no opportunity to correct.
Practical Candidate Guidance
Choosing Your RRB Wisely
You can choose only one RRB. Your choice determines which Zonal Railway you can be posted to. Consider:
- Proximity to your home state (for practical posting convenience)
- Vacancy volume under that RRB (higher vacancies generally mean more seats, but also potentially more applicants from that region)
- Language comfort for exams (CBT-1 and CBT-2 are available in 15 languages; CBAT is English only)
Once locked, this cannot be changed. If you pick an RRB impulsively and later realize the zone does not suit your location preferences, there is no recourse.
The CBAT Reality
Many candidates who clear CBT-1 and CBT-2 with strong marks fail at CBAT. This test evaluates psychological aptitude, not academic knowledge. It tests traits like concentration, divided attention, depth perception, and reaction time. These are partly innate traits that cannot be dramatically improved through short-term coaching. Candidates can practice using resources on the RDSO website, but expectations should be realistic. CBAT has a fixed qualifying T-score of 42 per battery, and it must be cleared battery by battery, not on aggregate.
Transfer and Posting Reality
ALP is not a desk job. It involves operating locomotives, which means irregular hours, shift work, and mandatory compliance with safety protocols. Initial posting is at the Zonal Railway level, and requests for inter-zonal transfer are not entertained for the first 5 to 10 years. The Competent Authority retains the right to transfer a railway servant anywhere in India, including to a project location outside the country. Candidates with strong location preferences or family constraints should factor this in before applying.
Training Period
Selected candidates undergo mandatory training. Only a stipend is paid during training. The notification states: "Selected candidates for the post of ALP will have to undergo training wherever prescribed and only stipend will be paid during the training period." Candidates expecting full salary from day one should adjust their financial planning.
Security Deposit/Bond
Selected candidates shall execute Security and/or Indemnity Bond wherever necessary. The specific bond amount and terms are determined at the time of appointment. This means leaving the job before the bond period expires will involve financial penalties.
4 Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes in RRB ALP Exams
- Ignoring General Science in CBT-1: It is based on 10th standard Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Many ITI/diploma candidates underestimate this section and lose easy marks.
- Not practicing under negative marking pressure: With 1/3 negative marking, random guessing on 10+ questions can push your score below the qualifying cut-off. Strategic omission is better than reckless guessing.
- Neglecting Part B of CBT-2: Part B is qualifying (35% minimum for all categories), and candidates who do not prepare their trade-specific syllabus sometimes fail this section despite scoring well in Part A. Failing Part B voids your Part A score entirely.
- Not preparing for CBAT at all: Many candidates treat CBAT as an afterthought. While innate aptitude plays a role, familiarizing yourself with the test format and practicing sample batteries on the RDSO website can make a meaningful difference
FAQs
Can I apply to more than one RRB?
No. You can apply to only one RRB and submit only one application. Violation leads to rejection and permanent debarment.
I had LASIK surgery 5 years ago. Can I still apply?
No. The notification explicitly disqualifies candidates who have undergone LASIK or any corrective eye surgery, regardless of when it was done.
Is there any interview in this recruitment?
No. The selection is entirely through CBT-1, CBT-2, CBAT, DV, and Medical Examination.
What if I fail Part B of CBT-2 but score very high in Part A?
Your candidature ends. Part B is mandatory qualifying. Without clearing Part B (minimum 35%), your Part A score is not considered for any further stage.
Can I change my RRB choice after submitting the application?
No. The chosen RRB is locked at the account creation stage and cannot be changed even during the modification window.
What is the exam language for CBAT?
English only. There is no option for Hindi or regional languages in CBAT.
Will I get a full salary during training?
No. Only a stipend is paid during the training period.
Is the EWS certificate from FY 2024-25 acceptable?
No. The Income and Asset Certificate must be for FY 2025-26 specifically. Certificates from previous financial years are not valid.
What happens if I cannot produce original documents at DV?
Your candidature will be cancelled. No additional time or second opportunity is provided for document production.

Final Candidate Advice
RRB ALP under CEN 01/2026 is a legitimate opportunity for ITI, diploma, and engineering graduates seeking a stable career in Indian Railways. The vacancy count of 11,127 is substantial, but the applicant volume will be enormous. The three-stage exam process, strict medical standards (especially the A-1 vision requirement and LASIK disqualification), and the CBAT aptitude filter mean that a significant percentage of applicants will not reach the final stage.
Before investing time and the application fee, verify three things honestly: your qualification matches Annexure-A exactly, your vision meets A-1 standards without any surgical correction history, and you are prepared for a career that involves locomotive operation with irregular hours, shift duty, and limited transfer flexibility for the first several years.
If all three conditions are met, this recruitment offers a defined career path with railway benefits, job security, and a reasonable starting salary. If any one of these conditions is uncertain, clarify it before applying rather than discovering the issue at document verification or the medical stage.
