Posts Without Physical Test

Most SSC CGL posts do not require physical or medical tests. Only the following posts have mandatory physical standards:

Pay Level 8 (Rs 47,600 - 1,51,100)

Direct recruits must qualify the Subordinate Audit/Accounts Service Examination during probation. Candidates with Commerce degrees or CA/CMA/CS qualifications are preferably allocated to the Commercial stream.

Pay Level 7 (Rs 44,900 - 1,42,400)

Note the age variation: ASO in CSS, Railways, MEA, and AFHQ require minimum age 20, while most others accept 18.

Pay Level 6 (Rs 35,400 - 1,12,400)

JSO has the widest age window at 18-32 years.

Pay Level 5 (Rs 29,200 - 92,300)

Pay Level 4 (Rs 25,500 - 81,100)

The age cap for Group C posts is tighter at 27 years, though relaxations apply.

Biggest Mistakes That Cancel SSC CGL Selection

These are errors that lead to permanent disqualification with no recourse:

1. Degree not declared by 01.08.2026. Processing by the university is not enough. Result must be officially declared.
2. Category certificate invalid at DV. OBC candidates must not be in creamy layer as on closing date. EWS certificate must be valid for FY 2026-27 based on income for FY 2025-26. Wrong format certificates are rejected.
3. Not submitting post preference on time. After Tier-II, SSC opens an online preference form. If you miss the window, you are excluded from allocation entirely. No second chance.
4. Failing physical test for preferred post. If allotted a post with physical/medical requirements and you fail, you will not be shifted to another post. Your candidature ends.

Eligibility - Educational Qualification

Bachelor's Degree from a recognized university or equivalent.

AAO / AAO State Cadre

• Bachelor's Degree, plus
• State Cadre additionally requires: Proficiency in Regional/official language of the State at Matriculation level, with certificate from a recognized State/Central Board

Desirable: CA, CMA, CS, M.Com, MBA (Finance), MBE

Junior Statistical Officer

Either:

• Bachelor's Degree (any subject) with minimum 60% marks in Mathematics at 12th level

Or:

• Bachelor's Degree with Statistics as a subject at degree level

Statistical Investigator Grade-II

Bachelor's degree in: Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Demography, Population Studies, Operation Research, IT, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Technology, Computer Application, Data Science, or Artificial Intelligence.

Age Limit (As on 01.08.2026)

Age Relaxation

Your date of birth as recorded in the Matriculation certificate is final. No change requests accepted later.

Important Note: ESM age relaxation does not extend to sons, daughters, or dependents.

Application Fee

Payment via BHIM UPI, Net Banking, or Debit cards. Non-refundable.

If the fee is not received, the application is marked "Incomplete" and rejected. Check payment status from your candidate login.

Tier-I Is the Screening Round

• Negative marking: 0.50 per wrong answer
• Bilingual (Hindi + English) except English section
• Sectional timer: Once a section's time runs out, it closes. No going back.

Separate cut-offs for:

• AAO posts
• JSO / Statistical Investigator
• All other posts

Tier-I only determines who advances to Tier-II. Its marks do not count toward final ranking.

Tier-II Is the Real Exam

Paper-I (Compulsory for All)

Conducted in two sessions on the same day.

What Happens If You Fail DEST?

DEST is qualifying. If you fail, you are eliminated regardless of your written score.

Maximum error percentage allowed:

PwBD-OH candidates can get DEST exemption with a medical certificate from a Civil Surgeon, except for posts where Computer Proficiency or DEST is specifically prescribed.

CKT and DEST - Higher Standards for Certain Posts

For posts where Computer Proficiency is prescribed (ASO in CSS, MEA, AFHQ, Inspector CBIC, Postal Assistant, etc.), both CKT and DEST will have higher qualifying cut-offs compared to other posts.

For posts where DEST is prescribed (Tax Assistant CBDT, Tax Assistant CBIC, Sub-Inspector CBN), higher DEST standards apply.

This means you could qualify DEST for general posts but still fail for Tax Assistant if you don't meet the higher benchmark.

Paper-II (Statistics) - JSO and Statistical Investigator Only

Negative marking: 0.50 per wrong answer.

Paper-III (Finance & Economics) - AAO Only

100 questions, 2 hours. Negative marking: 0.50 per wrong answer.

How Final Merit Is Built

Tier-I marks are not used.

One Wrong Preference Can Ruin Allocation

After Tier-II results, SSC opens an online post preference form. This is where the recruitment outcome is actually decided for you.

Here is what happens:

• You rank every post and department you want, in order of preference.
• SSC allocates based on merit + preference.
• Once you receive your highest available preference, you are locked in.
• If that post requires physical/medical standards and you fail, your candidature ends. No reallocation.

Candidates who do not submit preferences within the deadline are excluded entirely. SSC will not reopen the window.

The notification states:

"The option/preference once exercised by the candidates will be treated as FINAL and IRREVERSIBLE."

Application Process - Step by Step

Step 1: Go to https://ssc.gov.in. Click "Login or Register."

Step 2: Create One-Time Registration (OTR) on the new website. Old OTR from ssc.nic.in does not work.

Provide:

• Aadhaar number (recommended for authentication) or alternate documents
• Name, DOB, parents' names exactly as in Matriculation certificate
• Mobile number and email (OTP verification)
• Category, nationality, disability details
• Address

You must complete OTR within 14 days or your data is deleted.

Step 3: Login and click "Apply" under CGL 2026.

Application Rejection Triggers

These cause automatic rejection with no appeal:

• Fee not received by SSC
• Photo captured from a pre-existing photograph (unless Aadhaar-authenticated)

Friction Points Most Candidates Overlook

Live Photo Capture

The application module captures your photo in real-time. There is no option to upload a saved image (unless Aadhaar-authenticated).

Requirements:

• Plain background, good lighting
• No spectacles, cap, mask
• Camera at eye level, full frontal face
• Face must fill the designated frame

If you take a photo of your existing passport photo, the application is rejected.

Aadhaar Authentication Advantage

Candidates who authenticate via Aadhaar during OTR:

• Will not face rejection for photo or signature issues
• Do not need physical photo ID or passport photos at the exam centre

Non-Aadhaar candidates must reach the exam centre 2 hours early with two passport photos and original photo ID.

Exam Centre Selection

You must choose three centres within the same SSC region. No cross-region selection.

SSC reserves the right to cancel a centre, add new ones, or divert candidates. No change requests are entertained after submission.

Server Rush on Last Day

SSC explicitly states it will not be responsible if candidates cannot submit due to heavy server load near the deadline. Apply well before 22 June 2026.

• Height: 157.5 cm (relaxable by 5 cm for Garhwalis, Assamese, Gorkhas, STs)
• Chest: 81 cm expanded, minimum 5 cm expansion
• Walking: 1600 m in 15 min
• Cycling: 8 km in 30 min (not for SI CBN)

Female:

• Height: 152 cm (relaxable by 2.5 cm)
• Weight: 48 kg (relaxable by 2 kg)
• Walking: 1 km in 20 min
• Cycling: 3 km in 25 min (not for SI CBN)

Sub-Inspector CBI

• Male: 165 cm, Female: 150 cm
• Chest: 76 cm with expansion (males)
• Vision: 6/6 and 6/9 (with or without glasses)

Sub-Inspector NIA

• Male: 170 cm, Female: 150 cm

Physical and medical tests are conducted by the User Department after final selection, not by SSC.

Document Checklist

Prepare these well before Document Verification:

• Matriculation certificate and marksheet
• All graduation marksheets + degree / provisional certificate
• Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) in prescribed format

Work Reality After Selection

All India Service Liability: Every post. You may be posted anywhere in India.

Transfers: Departments like CBDT, CBIC, and Posts have periodic transfer cycles. CSS officers are generally Delhi-based but transfers to attached/subordinate offices are possible.

State Cadre posts (AAO/AAO State): You will be allocated to a state based on vacancies, merit, and preference. You may need to acquire regional language proficiency for confirmation.

Probation: Most posts have a probation period. AAO/AAO candidates must clear the Subordinate Audit/Accounts Service Examination for confirmation.

Promotion timeline: CSS cadre has a relatively structured promotion path (ASO → SO → US). CBDT/CBIC have departmental exam routes. Group C promotions are slower and vacancy-dependent.
