Haryana Prison Department Vacancy 2026: Quick Intro
The Haryana Staff Selection Commission recruits for state government Group-C posts through a two-stage model. In Phase-I, candidates sit for the Common Eligibility Test (CET) and receive a score valid for three years. When departments raise vacancies, Phase-II advertisements go out. CET qualifiers apply, get shortlisted by Phase-I rank, and then appear for a post-specific written exam and physical test. Advertisement No. 06/2026 is the Phase-II notification for four posts in the Haryana Prison Department. The Prison Department manages central jails, district jails, and sub-jails across the state. Warder is the entry-level uniformed post responsible for daily prison security operations. Assistant Superintendent Jail is a supervisory role requiring a degree and carrying a significantly higher pay grade. Both are permanent government posts.
The scale of this batch matters. The HSSC CET Phase-I held in July 2025 saw approximately 13.47 lakh candidates appear across the state, one of the largest CET turnouts Haryana has seen. Of those, candidates who cleared the minimum qualifying score are eligible to apply for Phase-II advertisements like this one. With 1,238 posts and zero application fee, the pool applying will be large. But the actual shortlist for Phase-II written exam is capped at ten times the available posts per category that is roughly 12,380 candidates across all categories combined.
Vacancy Details
The 1,238 posts are split into two groups based on pay scale and qualification.
Group 1 covers the Assistant Superintendent Jail post at FPL-6 pay scale with graduation as the required qualification: 30 posts for males and 3 posts for females, totalling 33.
Group 2 covers the Warder post at FPL-2 with 10+2 as the required qualification: 1,093 posts for males and 112 for females, totalling 1,205.
Note: Female vacancies are very less with only 115 vancies out of total 1238 posts. PwD vacancies are nil across all four posts.
Application Fee
No fee is required from any candidate. This applies to every category and every post under this advertisement. There is no payment step in the application process.
Since there is no financial barrier, the application volume is likely to be very high. Therefore Apply early as the application process runs for only 6 days. Apply online only at https://hssc.gov.in/; offline applications are not accepted under any circumstances.
Age Limit
Post | Minimum Age | Maximum Age |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant Superintendent Jail (Male and Female) | 21 years | 27 years |
| Warder (Male and Female) | 18 years | 25 years |
Age relaxation of 5 years applies to DSC, OSC, BCA, BCB, and EWS candidates only. This is specifically applicable for these Group-C Prison posts where the upper age limit is already below the standard 42-year ceiling. Ex-serviceman age relaxation follows separate Haryana government ESM rules. All age calculation is based on 30 June 2026, the closing date.
Also the 18 - 25 bracket for Warder posts is tighter than most Group-C positions in Haryana.
Educational Qualification
For Assistant Superintendent Jail (Male and Female): Graduation from any recognized university or its equivalent. Additionally, Hindi or Sanskrit must have been a subject in Matric or any higher-level examination.
For Warder Male and Warder Female: 10+2 or equivalent from a recognized education board. The Hindi or Sanskrit condition is the same.
Candidates must remember That language condition is not optional at all, if your Class 10 or Class 12 curriculum did not include Hindi or Sanskrit as an examinable subject you are ineligible, regardless of other qualifications and this is a standard requirement for Haryana state government recruitment.
ITI or diploma holders may qualify under the equivalency provisions of Appendix B of the official notification (available in the Important Links section toward end of the page). However, this equivalency is treated as provisional at the Commission level and is subject to final acceptance by the Prison Department.
Physical Standards
All shortlisted candidates must pass a Physical Measurement Test (PMT) and a Physical Screening Test (PST). Both are qualifying stages only and they contribute zero marks to the merit list but failing either is an elimination.
Running test (qualifying standards) For both posts:
- Male candidates: 2.5 km in 12 minutes
- Female candidates: 1 km in 6 minutes
- Ex-servicemen (Male): 1 km in 5 minutes
RFID or equivalent technology will be used to verify the running test, removing any margin for inaccuracy in timing.
Selection Process
Stage 1 β> CET Phase-I: From all eligible applicants per post category, up to 10 times the total advertised posts are shortlisted based on CET Phase-I rank. Only shortlisted candidates are called for the physical tests and Phase-II written exam.
Stage 2 β> Physical Measurement Test: Height and chest verification. They are Qualifying only.
Stage 3 β> Physical Screening Test: Running test as described above. Also Qualifying only.
Stage 4 β> Phase-II Written Examination: 100 MCQ questions, 100 marks, 1 hour 45 minutes, OMR-based and offline. Question paper is bilingual (Hindi and English). Minimum qualifying marks: 50% for General and 40% for Reserved categories.
The syllabus for Warder posts (Group 2) carries 70% weightage on subject-related topics: General Awareness, General Intelligence, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, Hindi, Haryana Economy, Rural Marketing, and Environmental Studies and Disaster Management. The remaining 30% covers Reasoning, Maths, Science, Computer fundamentals, and Haryana history and current affairs.
The syllabus Assistant Superintendent Jail (Group 1), the subject-related 70% covers General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, Hindi and English Language, Economics and Governance, and Environmental Studies and Disaster Management at graduation level.
There is no negative marking for wrong answers and penalty applies only to unattempted questions, for example, if a candidate leaves a question completely blank (no circle filled) then one mark is deducted. To safely skip a question, candidates must fill in the fifth bubble on the OMR sheet.
Additionally, candidates must not smudge, scratch, or erase anything on the OMR sheet using blade, whitener, eraser, or any other means, this leads to outright cancellation of the OMR sheet. Only one circle per question can be darkened; multiple circles mean the answer is not evaluated.
Stage 5 β> Merit and Selection: Based on Phase-II written exam marks. In case of a tie, the older candidate by age gets priority and If date of birth is also equal, then higher CET Phase-I marks decide.
An answer key will be published after the exam. Objections can be filed within the specified window at Rs. 250 per objection (non-refundable), and in that case expert committee decision is final.
Biometric data capture will be conducted at one or more stages of the process therefore, Any mismatch in biometric verification leads to cancellation on grounds of impersonation.

What Working as a Warder in Haryana's Prison Department Actually Means
Warder is the entry-level uniformed post in the department and the job description follows the designation closely. It involves shift-based duty inside prison facilities, supervising inmates during movement, maintaining order in daily prison operations, and responding to situations that arise within the jail premises. Transfer postings across different jail facilities in Haryana are part of the service conditions. The post comes with the stability of permanent government employment, seniority-based promotion prospects, and Haryana government benefits, but the working environment is demanding in ways that go beyond what the pay level or exam syllabus suggests. Candidates weighing this post purely as a government salary opportunity should assess honestly whether this environment fits their expectations before applying.
