UKSSSC Recruitment 2026: Quick Introduction

The High Court of Uttarakhand at Nainital runs its administrative work through subordinate civil and family courts spread across all 13 districts of the state. This recruitment fills clerical and stenography positions in that court system, which is one of the few state recruitment cycles where the eligibility is kept open to graduates from any stream rather than a specific subject background.

UKSSSC last conducted a similar graduate-level exam in September 2025 for 416 posts across various departments, more than one lakh candidates had appeared for it before the paper was leaked and the exam cancelled. With 398 posts on offer here and the same any-discipline eligibility, a turnout in that same range is expected.

For someone tracking Uttarakhand government jobs, this notification is significant as Judiciary-side recruitments in the state usually come in batches of a few dozen to a few hundred at most, so 398 posts in this recruitment cycle is a significant number to target.

Vacancy Details

The total 398 vacancies are distributed across four post categories. The majority of posts i.e., 230 Junior Assistant positions are in Civil Courts, while Family Courts have 29 Junior Assistant vacancies. For Stenographer/PA roles, Civil Courts have 128 posts and Family Courts have 11 posts.

Each of these totals is then broken down district by district in the official notification (available in Important Links section  toward end of the page), and within every district further split by reservation category. As per the state's standing reservation policy applied here, Scheduled Caste candidates get 19 percent of seats, Scheduled Tribe 4 percent, Other Backward Classes 14 percent, and Economically Weaker Section 10 percent, with the remaining seats open. Horizontal reservation on top of this gives 30 percent of posts to women, 5 percent to ex-servicemen, 4 percent to persons with disabilities, 5 percent to orphans, 4 percent to skilled sportspersons, 2 percent to dependents of freedom fighters, and 10 percent to candidates recognised under the Uttarakhand state movement.

Because the exact category-wise count varies district by district, a candidate should check the figure for their own preferred district in the detailed roster attached to the official notification (available in Important Links section toward end of the page). Districts like Dehradun and Haridwar carry the largest share of posts given their population and case load, while smaller hill districts like Rudraprayag and Bageshwar have single digit openings in several categories.

The fee depends on category and is the same for both posts.

Age Limit

Age is calculated as on 1 January 2026 for both posts. A candidate must be at least 21 and not more than 35 years old on that date, meaning the date of birth should fall between 2 January 1991 and 1 January 2005.

Candidates who have already availed of reservation benefits in any government service are not eligible for the same benefits again under the ex-servicemen or state movement categories.

Educational Qualification

For both Junior Assistant and Stenographer Grade-1/Personal Assistant posts, the essential qualification is:

> A graduate degree from a university established by law in India, or an equivalent qualification recognized by the government.

> Good knowledge of Hindi and English languages.

> For Junior Assistant: Hindi typing speed of 25 words per minute on a computer. Candidates with English typing speed of 30 words per minute are given preference.

> For Stenographer/PA: Hindi shorthand speed of 80 words per minute and Hindi typing speed of 25 words per minute. Candidates with English shorthand and typing skills are given preference.

> Adequate knowledge of computer operation.

The notification does not specify a minimum percentage in graduation, so anyone with a valid graduate degree meets the academic requirement. However, typing and shorthand skills are mandatory and will be tested.

Selection Process

Selection runs through three stages: a written objective exam, a qualifying typing or shorthand test, and document verification.

The written exam carries 140 marks, runs for 2 hours 30 minutes, and is based on General Knowledge and General Studies. The typing or shorthand test carries 60 marks and is qualifying in nature, meaning it doesn't add to your written exam score, it only confirms whether you clear the minimum speed and accuracy bar for your post. Minimum qualifying marks in the written exam are 45 percent for unreserved and OBC candidates and 35 percent for SC/ST candidates. There is negative marking i.e., 1/4 mark deducted for each wrong answer, also candidates who mark more than one option for a question will also lose marks.

Because the typing test is only qualifying in nature and doesn't add marks, therefore, written exam is where the real ranking happens, and a tied written score is broken first by who clears the English typing or shorthand standard and then by age, meaning the older candidate ranked higher.
It is also worth knowing that UKSSSC has dealt with serious paper leak incidents in 2021 and again in 2025. In 2025 the  complete exam was cancelled with over a lakh candidates was appearing for that exam. Therefore, this time the official notification itself carries an unusually detailed set of exam-hall rules, including a strict ban on electronic devices and a state law, the Uttarakhand Competitive Examination Act 2023, that prescribes jail time for anyone involved in unfair means.

Salary, Job Location, and Service Conditions

The pay scale varies by post and court type:

Before proceeding with the application form, applicants should go through these important practical points:

The Family Court Steno Post Pays Meaningfully More

If you are looking at the Stenographer Grade-1 or PA role, check out the family court job. It gives Pay Level 7, which is two steps higher than the civil court job at Level 5. There are only 11 family court openings, but civil courts have 128. So, fewer jobs come with much better pay. If you are good at shorthand and typing, this is a smart choice. It is also worth thinking about, since these 11 seats might see fewer applicants.

Your District Choice Locks You In

When you fill out the online form, you have to pick a district right away. The official notice clearly says this choice is fixed and cannot be changed later. Your final posting depends on your rank and the open seats in that district. So, if you pick a district just because you hope to go there, without checking if there are enough vacancies, it might not work well for you. This is especially true if your rank falls in the middle.

If your typing is slow when they check your documents, it can wipe out a good score you got in the written test. Also, keep in mind that the last similar UKSSSC exam for graduates had over one lakh people applying. So, do not treat the written test as just a formality.
