SSC JE Recruitment 2026: Quick Intro

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has announced the Junior Engineer Examination 2026 with 1,748 tentative vacancies across 13 central government organisations, under different ministries, including Jal Shakti, Defence, Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Telecommunications and Fisheries, along with CPWD and the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Application Fee

The application fee is Rs.100. Candidates can pay the fee only through BHIM UPI, Net Banking, or Visa, MasterCard, Maestro and RuPay debit cards. Offline payment and challan-based payment are not available for this recruitment.

Women candidates and candidates belonging to SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen categories are exempted from the application fee. The fee, once paid, is non-refundable and cannot be carried forward or adjusted against any other SSC examination.

The fee payment deadline is 23 September 2026, one day after the online application window closes on 22 September 2026. However, the application will be treated as incomplete and rejected if the required fee is not paid by the deadline. Corrections to the submitted application are also subject to a fee. The first correction costs Rs.200, while a second correction costs Rs.500, applicable to all candidates regardless of category.


Age Limit

The age limit is calculated as on 1 August 2026. For most posts, candidates must be 18 to 30 years old, meaning they should have been born between 2 August 1996 and 1 August 2008. For posts under CPWD and the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships, the age limit is wider at 18 to 32 years. Candidates born on or after 2 August 1994 can apply for these specific posts, subject to the other eligibility conditions.

Selection Process

The selection process includes Paper-I, Paper-II and Document Verification. Candidates applying for BRO posts must also qualify in the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and medical examination. The minimum qualifying marks are 30% for Unreserved candidates, 25% for OBC and EWS candidates, and 20% for SC, ST and PwBD candidates.

Paper-I is only a qualifying stage, so its marks are not counted in the final merit list. Candidates who meet the required cutoff move on to Paper-II, which carries 300 marks and tests only the relevant engineering subject. Negative marking is also stricter in Paper-II. One mark is deducted for each wrong answer, compared with 0.25 marks in Paper-I.
SSC prepares separate merit lists for JE (Civil), JE (Electrical & Mechanical), JE (Telecom) and Scientific Assistant. This means candidates compete within the applicant pool for their respective post.
 
*Tie-Breaking Rules: if two or more candidates secure the same aggregate marks in Paper-II, the tie will be resolved in the following order:
> Higher marks in Part I of Paper-I.
> Higher marks in Part II of Paper-I.
> Date of birth, with the older candidate placed higher.
> Alphabetical order of the candidate's name.

Salary, Job Location, and Service Conditions

Selected candidates are appointed at Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix, with a pay scale of Rs.35,400 to Rs.1,12,400. The Junior Engineer post is classified as Group B, Non-Gazetted. The prescribed probation period is two years.

All posts under this recruitment carry All India Service Liability, so selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India. Depending on the place of posting, they may also be required to learn the local language of the allotted state for confirmation. Candidates selected for Border Roads Organisation (BRO) posts undergo initial training at the GREF Centre, Dighi Camp, Pune. They are governed by the Central Civil Services Rules, along with certain provisions of the Army Act, 1950. BRO personnel are generally posted to border and hilly areas in line with the organisation's road construction and infrastructure responsibilities. The BRO posts under this recruitment are open only to male candidates.
