  • Candidates found ineligible during document verification on interview day will not be allowed to participate in the personal interaction
  • Each contractual staff member is required to stay on the Vidyalaya campus
  • Staff must devote full time to Vidyalaya duties and cannot engage in any trade or business independently during the contract period
  • Contract will terminate automatically when a regular incumbent joins, regardless of remaining contract duration
  • One month's remuneration will not be paid if the regular incumbent joins during the contract period
  • Candidates must submit an undertaking that no criminal case or complaint of criminal nature is pending against them
  • Retired teachers up to 65 years of age may be considered subject to fitness and willingness
  • 8 days of casual leave are available for a 10-month contract period
  • The remuneration for short breaks will be paid only in the month of April on completion of the contract
  • Contract staff are not entitled to any terminal benefits at the end of the contract
  • The registration form must be emailed, not posted. No hard copy submission is required at the registration stage.

The selection process here is not your typical competitive exam route, and that changes a few things candidates should think about carefully before registering.

Who Is This Really For?

This engagement suits candidates who already have solid experience in the education sector and are looking for structured work in a recognized government residential school setting. The weightage system rewards experience heavily, particularly residential school experience. Freshers who have just cleared B.Ed. with no teaching experience will likely score very low on the experience component, which carries significant weightage across all posts.

For candidates in Northeast India who are comfortable with residential life and have prior JNV or government school experience, this is a well-suited short-term engagement. The salary is reasonable, accommodation and meals are provided within the campus, and working within NVS adds credibility to a teaching resume.

If you have been working as a contractual teacher in any JNV previously, your chances here are notably better because the weightage tables favor residential school experience and JNV-specific experience is rewarded at double the marks of non-residential government school experience.

Hidden Challenges

The contractual nature of this engagement is both its key feature and its biggest limitation. There is no guarantee of extension beyond the session, and there is no path to regularization through this route. If a regular teacher joins mid-session, the contract ends — and importantly, one month's salary may not be paid in that scenario.

The posting locations are spread across Northeast India, including some relatively remote districts. Candidates who are not comfortable living on campus in a residential school setting in states like Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, or interior parts of Assam and Meghalaya should think practically about relocation before applying.

The application process itself requires attention. You must identify the correct venue JNV for your subject, send your registration to the right email address, and ensure you are available physically for the interview between 6 to 9 May 2026. If you send your form to the wrong venue or miss the email window, there is no provision for transfer or reconsideration.

Reality Check

The monthly remuneration of Rs. 40,625 to Rs. 44,900 is acceptable for a contractual role, but this should be understood clearly — it is contractual pay, not a government pay scale. No terminal benefits, no pension, and no guarantee of continuation. The accommodation and meals benefit on campus does partially offset daily living costs, which is worth factoring in.

For candidates who are already in the Northeast and have prior teaching experience in recognized schools, this is genuinely worth attending the walk-in for. For someone relocating from another state purely for a one-session contract, the calculation needs to be more careful. The subjects available are specific per venue, and many venues have only one or two posts open, so competition within each venue will be real even if it is not as broad as a national-level exam.

Candidates who want to explore related teaching or government education sector opportunities may find these posts relevant as well.

TGT posts like Art, Music, Physical Education, Library, and 3rd Language subjects have different conditions. TGT Special Educator requires CTET (Elementary Stage) qualification.

Q6. What is the selection process for NVS Shillong contractual engagement?

There is no written examination. Selection is based on a document-based weightage scoring system that includes marks for educational qualification, B.Ed. percentage, higher qualifications, teaching experience, and then a personal interaction (interview). Total marks vary by post (typically 75 to 80 for document scoring and 20 to 40 for personal interaction, totalling 100 marks).

Q7. What is the monthly salary for contractual teachers in NVS Shillong 2026?

PGT: Rs. 42,250 per month. TGT: Rs. 40,625 per month. Female Staff Nurse: Rs. 40,625 per month. Counselor: Rs. 44,900 per month. Hostel Superintendent: Rs. 35,750 per month. In addition, campus accommodation and free meals are available during the contract period.

No documents need to be attached with the email. All originals must be brought physically on the day of the walk-in interview.

Q9. Is this a permanent government job?

No. This is a purely contractual engagement for the academic session 2026-27 only, or until a regular incumbent joins the post, whichever is earlier. There is no provision for regularization or extension of service. Contractual staff have no claim to permanent employment in NVS through this route.

Q10. Which states are covered under NVS Shillong Region?

The Shillong Regional Office covers JNVs in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. The 26 interview venues are spread across these seven states, with the majority in Assam.

Q11. Can I apply for multiple posts or multiple venues?

The notification does not explicitly restrict applications to one venue or one post. However, each post is assigned to a specific venue JNV, and candidates must submit their form to the correct school's email based on the subject they are applying for. If you are eligible for more than one subject, you may contact the respective venue principals separately.

Q12. What documents are needed on the day of the walk-in interview?

Original certificates from Class 10 onwards with self-attested photocopies, experience certificate in prescribed format (Annexure-B, C, or D), one passport-size photograph, identity proof (Aadhaar/Voter ID), category certificate if applicable, and for specific posts — State Nursing Council registration, RCI registration certificate, or CTET certificate as relevant.

Final Instructions for Candidates

This NVS Shillong contractual recruitment is a practical option for qualified teachers and professionals in the Northeast who have the right subject background and some relevant experience. The walk-in format keeps the process straightforward, but the email registration deadline of 28 April 2026 needs to be treated seriously. Missing it means missing the window entirely, since the venue principals schedule interviews based on the registration pool they receive.

If your subject matches one of the 26 venue schools listed in the notification, identify the correct venue, download the registration form, and email it before the deadline. On the interview day, make sure your experience certificates follow the prescribed Annexure format. That document accuracy often makes a real difference in the scoring system used here.

Check the official NVS Shillong Regional Office website at navodaya.gov.in/nvs/ro/Shillong/en/home/index.html for the official notification PDF, Annexure forms, and any updates or corrections that may be issued before the interview dates.
