MP High Court Stenographer Recruitment 2026: Quick Intro
The High Court of Madhya Pradesh, Jabalpur has invited online applications through Notification No. 666/Pariksha/2026 for 418 posts in the District and Sessions Courts of Madhya Pradesh. The vacancies include 69 Stenographer Grade-II, 299 Stenographer Grade-III, 20 Stenographer Grade-III in Court Manager Staff, and 30 Assistant Grade-III, English Knowing posts. The online application process started on 6 October 2026 and will remain open until 27 October 2026 at 5:00 PM. Candidates must also complete the application fee payment by the same deadline.
The High Court of Madhya Pradesh conducts a centralized recruitment process for staff positions in the District and Sessions Courts across the state. This recruitment mainly covers stenography-related posts, where selected candidates are responsible for taking dictation from judicial officers and preparing typed court documents and orders. The Assistant Grade-III, English Knowing post is also selected through a similar English shorthand and typing-based skill assessment. Candidates selected through this recruitment will be posted in the District and Sessions Courts of Madhya Pradesh.
The previous comparable recruitment was announced in late 2021, with the High Court advertising 1,255 posts through a single notification. Of these, 910 posts were for Assistant Grade-III clerical positions. For the four posts covered in the current recruitment, the combined vacancy count in 2021 was 345, compared with 418 vacancies in 2026. This means the vacancies in the posts covered by the current notification have increased, even though the overall 2021 recruitment had a higher total vacancy count.
Vacancy Details: Post-wise and Category-wise
Stenographer Grade-III accounts for 299 of the 418 vacancies, making up around 72% of the total recruitment. The remaining vacancies include 69 Stenographer Grade-II, 20 Stenographer Grade-III in Court Manager Staff, and 30 Assistant Grade-III, English Knowing posts.
The post-wise and category-wise vacancy distribution is provided below:
Reservation benefits and age relaxation are available only to candidates who are original residents of Madhya Pradesh and meet the applicable eligibility conditions. Candidates from other states will be treated as unreserved (UR) for this recruitment and cannot claim Madhya Pradesh's reserved-category benefits.
20% of the vacancies are reserved horizontally for eligible contractual staff of the High Court or District Courts who have completed at least five years of service on an equivalent post. If any vacancies under this reservation remain unfilled, they will be offered to other eligible candidates belonging to the same category.
Note: The notification provides for an increase in OBC reservation from 14% to 27%. However, Writ Petition No. 5901/2019, which challenges the increased reservation, is still pending before the High Court.
Because of this pending case, the recruitment results will be issued in two parts:
Main result: For 370 posts
Provisional result: For 48 posts, including 9 Stenographer Grade-II and 39 Stenographer Grade-III posts.
Candidates included against these 48 provisional vacancies should note that their appointment will remain subject to the final decision of the High Court in the pending matter.
Application Fee
Unreserved candidates and applicants from outside Madhya Pradesh have to pay a total application fee of βΉ943.40, which includes an βΉ200 examination fee and βΉ743.40 portal and other charges. OBC, SC, ST and EWS candidates who are original residents of Madhya Pradesh are required to pay only the βΉ743.40 portal and other charges. Persons with Disabilities (PwD) are also required to pay only the βΉ743.40 portal and other charges, subject to the applicable conditions.
The application fee can be paid online through Debit Card or Internet Banking. The fee once paid is non-refundable and cannot be adjusted against any other application or payment. The prescribed fee is also subject to change as per the applicable instructions of the High Court.
Candidates who qualify for the first stage of the selection process and are shortlisted for the skill test will have to pay an additional βΉ743.40 portal charge online. Failure to make this payment will be treated as unwillingness to appear in the skill test, resulting in cancellation of the candidature.
Note: If the amount is deducted from your bank account but the application portal shows βPayment Status: Failβ, the payment status may take 48 to 72 hours to update. Candidates are therefore advised not to wait until the last day or final hours to complete the payment.
Age Limit
Candidates must be at least 18 years old as on 1 January 2026 to apply for the recruitment. The maximum age limit varies according to the candidate's category and is also calculated with reference to 1 January 2026.
Ex-servicemen can deduct their period of defence service from their actual age for determining eligibility. However, after this adjustment, their age cannot exceed the prescribed upper age limit by more than three years.
Eligible contractual staff of the High Court or District Courts with at least five years of service will receive age relaxation equivalent to their period of contractual service, subject to a maximum age limit of 55 years.
Educational Qualification
Candidates applying for any of the advertised posts must meet four key qualification requirements:
- A graduation degree in any subject from a recognised university.
- A valid CPCT scorecard.
- A shorthand certificate with the required speed for the post.
- A one-year computer diploma from a recognised institution.
All required qualifications must be completed on or before 27 October 2026, which is the last date for submitting the application. Candidates must also have the CPCT marksheet or certificate available by the application deadline.
- The computer diploma requirement is an important part of the eligibility criteria. As per the General Administration Department circular dated 18 August 2015, the following qualifications are accepted:
> A one-year computer diploma from a UGC-recognised university or open university.
> A DOEACC or NIELIT diploma-level computer course.
> A Modern Office Management course from a Government Polytechnic.
> A one-year COPA (Computer Operator and Programming Assistant) certificate from a Government ITI.
Candidates should ensure that their computer qualification falls under one of the accepted categories before submitting the application.
Candidates holding certain higher or equivalent computer-related qualifications can meet the computer diploma requirement. These include BE (CSE/IT), MCA, BCA, MSc (IT/CS), BSc (IT/CS), M.Tech and ME. An AICTE-approved Polytechnic Diploma in Computer Science, Computer Application or Information Technology is also accepted. However, a BSc or BCom degree with only one computer-related subject does not fulfil the computer qualification requirement.
Note: A 2019 circular further clarifies that a BSc degree with Information Technology or Computer Science as one of the subjects can be treated as BSc (IT/CS) if the marksheet clearly confirms the relevant subject.
Candidates should carefully verify their qualification before applying, as the High Court will not entertain individual queries regarding the validity of documents. Apply only when your certificate or marksheet clearly matches one of the accepted qualifications.
Selection Process
The selection process consists of two stages.
The first stage is an online preliminary examination consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions, with 1 mark for each question. Candidates will get 120 minutes to complete the test. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers in the preliminary examination.
Note: The preliminary examination is only a screening test and its marks will not be counted towards the final merit list. Candidates will be shortlisted category-wise at approximately five times the number of available posts. However, all candidates who secure marks equal to the cut-off score will also be included, so the actual number shortlisted may be higher than five candidates per post.
The second stage is the Skill Test, carrying 100 marks. The test is conducted in Hindi for Stenographer Grade-II, Stenographer Grade-III and Stenographer Grade-III in Court Manager Staff, while the English Knowing post is tested in English.
Candidates will receive a dictation of approximately 400 words for 5 minutes, followed by 30 minutes to transcribe the dictated passage on a computer provided at the examination centre. For Hindi transcription, candidates must use the Remington Gail keyboard layout. Candidates cannot bring their own keyboard to the examination centre.
Note: In the Skill Test, 0.5 marks are deducted for each mistake, including wrong words, spelling errors, missing words, punctuation errors, and extra or missing spaces. If the number of mistakes exceeds 120, the candidate will receive zero marks.
Candidates must write the dictation in shorthand. Writing it in longhand in the notebook will result in zero marks for the entire test. Before the actual test, candidates will be given a mock dictation. They will also get additional time to check and test the keyboard provided at the examination centre before the test begins.
To qualify in the Skill Test, candidates must secure at least 55% for General and OBC, 45% for SC, 49.5% for EWS, and 40% for ST and Persons with Disabilities (PwD). If two candidates obtain the same marks, the older candidate will be given preference.
The final merit list will be prepared category-wise based on Skill Test marks and the post or posts selected in the application form. The vacancies will be filled in the following order: Stenographer Grade-II, followed by Stenographer Grade-III, then Stenographer Grade-III in Court Manager Staff. The Assistant Grade-III, English Knowing post will have a separate merit list.
Candidates can submit objections to the provisional answer key within seven days of its publication. Objections must be submitted in writing and in physical form to the Principal Registrar (Examination), High Court of Madhya Pradesh, Jabalpur, through the Receipt Section. Candidates must also attach the relevant supporting documents or source material with their objections. Objections submitted through email will not be accepted.
Salary, Job Location and Service Conditions
The notification provides both the old Sixth Pay Commission scale and the Seventh Pay Matrix for the advertised posts.
Under the Sixth Pay Scale, all four posts fall under the βΉ5,200-20,200 pay band, with different grade pay:
Stenographer Grade-II: βΉ2,800 Grade Pay
Stenographer Grade-III: βΉ2,400 Grade Pay
Stenographer Grade-III, Court Manager Staff: βΉ1,900 Grade Pay
Assistant Grade-III, English Knowing: βΉ1,900 Grade Pay
Under the Seventh Pay Matrix, which the notification states will apply, the pay ranges are:
Stenographer Grade-II: βΉ28,700-91,300
Stenographer Grade-III: βΉ25,300-80,500
Court Manager Staff and Assistant Grade-III, English Knowing: βΉ19,500β62,000.
*Candidates will also receive allowances as per applicable government rules.
The difference in pay becomes important because the final merit position determines the post allotted to a candidate. The starting pay of Stenographer Grade-II is βΉ3,400 higher than Grade-III, while Grade-III starts βΉ5,800 higher than Stenographer Grade-III in Court Manager Staff. This difference applies even though the qualification and Skill Test are the same for all three posts.
Districts will be allotted through counselling, based on the candidate's category-wise merit position and the number of vacancies available in each district. Selection does not give a candidate any right to claim a particular district or post.
The Principal District and Sessions Judge of the concerned district will be the appointing authority. Requests for a change of district after counselling, including mutual exchange between candidates, will not be considered.
The work is mainly desk-based within the court complex and follows fixed court working hours. Candidates should therefore be prepared to relocate to the district allotted to them.
Selected candidates will be required to execute a βΉ2 lakh service bond agreeing to serve for a minimum period of three years. If a candidate leaves the service before completing this period or violates any condition of the bond, the bond amount may become payable. The bond condition does not apply to candidates who leave with prior permission to join the Madhya Pradesh Government or Central Government service, subject to the applicable conditions.
Selected candidates must also submit a medical fitness certificate issued by the District Medical Board. A candidate may be appointed provisionally if the certificate is submitted within 30 days from the date of appointment.
