IOB LBO Recruitment 2026: Quick Intro

Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) is a Chennai-headquartered public sector bank with a wide branch network across India, along with a presence in select overseas locations. The Local Bank Officer role is designed to build a State-focused officer cadre with a strong understanding of the local language and customer base. The aim is to ensure that officers can handle branch-level responsibilities and customer interactions effectively, without language becoming a barrier to day-to-day banking services.

This is not IOB's first Local Bank Officer recruitment drive. The bank introduced a similar recruitment in 2025 under Advertisement No. HRDD/RECT/01/2025-26, initially announcing 400 vacancies across six states, but vacancy count was later revised to 460, with Tamil Nadu seeing the largest increase, from 260 to 320 posts. The 2026 recruitment cycle is smaller, with 250 vacancies across four states, compared with the previous drive.

Odisha, West Bengal, and Punjab, which were included in the previous recruitment drive, are not part of the 2026 notification. Karnataka, meanwhile, has been added to the list of participating states for the first time.

Vacancy Details

Of the 250 vacancies, Tamil Nadu has the highest number with 100 posts, followed by Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat with 50 each. Some of the 250 vacancies include backlog posts carried forward from earlier recruitment cycles and IOB has included these unfilled reserved vacancies in the current recruitment rather than announcing them through a separate recruitment drive.

Note: PwBD reservation is horizontal, so, eligible candidates are considered within their respective SC, ST, OBC, EWS, or UR category rather than being placed in a separate category. The Unreserved (UR) and OBC categories together account for nearly 70% of the total vacancies.

Merit list is prepared state-wise, so, candidates compete within their respective State rather than against applicants from across the country.

Application Fee

The application fee applicable to each category is given below:

The application fee can be paid only through online modes, including debit card, credit card, net banking, BHIM, or UPI. Once the payment is completed, the fee is non-refundable and cannot be adjusted against any other IOB recruitment. Candidates should therefore confirm their eligibility and application details before making the payment.

Age Limit

The age limit is 20 to 30 years as on 1 August 2026. In other words, candidates must have been born between 2 August 1996 and 1 August 2006, with both dates included. The age relaxation applicable to different categories is mentioned below:

Note: Candidates belonging to SC, ST, or OBC categories who are eligible for more than one applicable relaxation may claim cumulative age relaxation, subject to the maximum upper age limit of 50 years.

Educational Qualification

Candidates must hold a degree in any discipline from a recognised university at the time of online registration. Those who are awaiting their final results are not eligible. Also there is no minimum percentage or particular academic stream requirements.

The "any discipline" eligibility rule makes this recruitment open to graduates from a wide range of academic backgrounds. It allows candidates from fields such as engineering, science, commerce, arts, and other disciplines to apply. At the same time, this broader eligibility can result in a larger and more diverse applicants, which makes competition in every stage of this recruitment an important factor to consider.

Selection Process

The selection process consists of 3 stages: an online examination, a Language Proficiency Test and a Personal Interview
Stage-1: Online Examination. The complete exam pattern and structure are given below:

Note: a negative marking of one-fourth (1/4th) of the marks applies for every incorrect answer in the Online Examination but no marks are deducted for questions left unanswered. The minimum qualifying aggregate score in the Online Examination is 30% for reserved category candidates and 35% for unreserved candidates and there is no separate sectional cut-off, so a lower score in one section can be balanced by stronger performance in another, provided the overall qualifying percentage is met.

Stage-2: Language Proficiency Test. It is required only for candidates who have not studied the local language of the State they have applied for as a subject in Class 10 or Class 12.  It is also important to note that test is conducted before the Personal Interview and candidates who are required to take this test must qualify in it, as failing the language test will result in disqualification, regardless of their performance in the Online Examination.
Stage-3: Personal Interview. It carries 100 marks. Candidates from reserved categories must secure at least 45%, while the minimum qualifying mark for unreserved candidates is 50% and for the final merit list, the Online Examination and Personal Interview are given 80% and 20% weightage, respectively.

=> In practical terms, the Online Examination is the main stage, as it is conducted for all before candidates are shortlisted for the interview. The Personal Interview then assesses overall suitability and other relevant aspects of the candidate and for applicants who are required to take it, the Language Proficiency Test (LPT) is also an important qualifying stage and should not be treated as a formality.

Salary, Job Location and Service Conditions

Selected candidates will be appointed as Assistant Managers in Scale-I, with a starting basic pay of Rs.48,480 per month, which increases through the prescribed increments up to Rs.85,920, along with applicable allowances such as Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and City Compensatory Allowance (CCA). Candidates with prior experience in a Scheduled Commercial Bank in a comparable Scale-I Generalist Officer role may also be eligible for up to two advance increments. But this benefit is subject to verification, and the previous employer must certify that the candidate's role and responsibilities match the prescribed requirements. IOB has also clarified that correspondence will not be entertained where the claimed experience does not meet the required criteria.

Posting will generally remain within the State selected by the candidate at the time of application for the first 12 years of service, or until the candidate is promoted to SMGS-IV grade, whichever occurs earlier, and since reaching SMGS-IV grade generally involves multiple promotion stages, most selected candidates can expect to remain within their chosen State for a significant part of their early career. So, in practical terms, the State-specific posting requirement may extend for more than a decade for many candidates.

Selected candidates will undergo a 2-year probation period and must execute a Financial Service Indemnity Bond of Rs.2,00,000, committing to serve the bank for a minimum period of 3 years as per the recruitment terms.

How to Apply

  1. Go to the official website at www.iob.bank.in
  2. Click on the "Careers" page and open the link for Recruitment of Local Bank Officers 2026-27
  3. Register online to receive your Registration Number and Password by email and SMS
  4. Upload your photograph, signature, left thumb impression and handwritten declaration exactly as per the specifications given in Annexure I
  5. Fill in personal, educational and category details carefully in the application form
  6. Pay the application fee online through debit card, credit card, net banking, BHIM or UPI
  7. Click Complete Registration and review every field before final submission
  8. Download and save the system generated application form and e-receipt for future reference

Names must be spelled exactly as they appear on your certificates and mark sheets. Any mismatch here is flagged in the notification as a possible ground for disqualification, so this is not a step to rush through.

Required Documents and Important Instructions

Before starting the application, keep scanned copies of your photograph (4.5cm x 3.5cm, 20 to 50 KB), signature (10 to 20 KB), left thumb impression (20 to 50 KB) and a handwritten declaration in English (50 to 100 KB) ready. Files must meet the specified dimensions, pixel limits, and file-size requirements given in Annexure I (Page 18) of the official notification pdf (available in the Important Links section toward end of the page). IOB is stricter than most PSU banks on this point, since the system will not let you proceed to the next stage of the form until these files match the given specifications.

The handwritten declaration must be in your own handwriting and in English only, not typed and not in capital letters, otherwise your application is treated as invalid. Candidates who genuinely cannot write may get the declaration typed and add their left thumb impression below it instead. At the time of Personal Interview, keep originals and self-attested photocopies ready of your date of birth proof, language proficiency proof (10th or 12th mark sheet showing the subject), educational certificates, category certificates where applicable, and a No Objection Certificate if you currently work in a government or PSU role, since its absence means your candidature will not be considered.

Read the key points below carefully to get a clearer understanding of the recruitment process:

Language Proficiency: An Important Part of the Selection Process

Unlike many bank officer recruitments, this process includes a Language Proficiency Test before the interview for candidates who have not studied the applied State's local language as a subject in Class 10 or 12. Candidates who fall under this requirement must qualify in the test to proceed furtherin this recruitment process. For example, applicants from Karnataka or Gujarat who do not have Kannada or Gujarati listed in their Class 10 or 12 academic records should therefore prepare for the language test seriously rather than treating it as a routine formality.

Choose Your State With the Long Term in Mind

The State selected during registration cannot be changed later, so candidates should make this decision carefully. Since the merit list is prepared separately for each State, your choice directly determines the pool in which you will compete. Also selected officers are generally required to remain posted within the chosen State for 12 years or until promotion to SMGS-IV grade, whichever is earlier
