GSRTC Driver and Conductor Recruitment: Quick Introduction

GSRTC is Gujarat's largest public road transport body, operating thousands of daily bus services across the state and into neighbouring states. It recruits directly into its operational workforce through periodic large-scale drives. This 2026 batch is notable for its combined total of nearly 9,000 vacancies across two operational cadres, making it one of the bigger GSRTC recruitment cycles in recent years. GSRTC fills these positions through a fixed-pay contract system before regularising.

Both posts carry a starting fixed pay of Rs. 26,000 per month for five years, but this is not a permanent appointment from start,  after five-year probation and performance reviews at the two-year mark, selected candidates become eligible for regular appointment in the Driver or Conductor cadre at GSRTC's contemporary basic pay scales.

GSRTC previously conducted Driver and Conductor recruitments in 2022 and 2023, which also attracted a large number number of applications from across the country, so there will be a significant competition during the recruitment process.

Before applying, candidates should carefully understand these important practical points:

Why the Driver's 60% Driving Test Weightage Reshapes Who Should Prepare for What

With 60% of the final merit coming from the Driving Test, the Driver selection in this recruitment is structurally different from most government exams where written performance dominates. A professional heavy vehicle driver who scores good in the OMR written exam can still outrank a candidate who scores higher on paper if they drive well. The Driving Test is both a qualifier (minimum 35 out of 50 to proceed) and the primary merit decider. Heavy vehicle professionals who handle bus operations daily, including narrow-road maneuvering, traffic control assistance, and passenger loading, have a genuine technical advantage in this recruitment.

The PSV Badge Rule That Stops Eligible Drivers at the Application Stage

for Driver recruitment PSV badge must be held at the time of submitting the online application, not later. This is a must fulfil condition. Many experienced commercial heavy vehicle drivers who have been operating buses, trucks, or heavy vehicles for years have either not converted to a PSV badge or have an expired one. Applying first and then getting the badge later will not work. The application date is the cut-off date for badge validity. Similarly, Conductor applicants must hold a valid Conductor licence with badge on the application date itself. Renewing these documents before June 6, 2026 is mandatory.
