Introduction

The Andaman and Nicobar Police Department has put out one of its most comprehensive recruitment notices in recent years, covering posts across five distinct wings: the Executive Branch, Police Radio Organisation (PR), Police Motor Transport (PMT), Police Marine Force (PMF), Fire and Emergency Services (FS), and India Reserve Battalion (IRBn). This is a combined recruitment under a single advertisement, and candidates can apply for multiple posts based on preference.

What makes this recruitment structurally different from most police jobs on the mainland is the range of roles being filled simultaneously. Beyond the usual Sub-Inspector and Constable posts, vacancies exist for specialist roles like Radio Operator (ASI), Cipher Operator (ASI), Sub-Inspector (Master) for the marine unit, Firemen, Police Constable (Greaser) and (Lascar), and a range of Follower-level posts in trades such as cooking, tailoring, carpentry, and barbering. This breadth means the notification is genuinely open to candidates with educational qualifications ranging from Class 10 to a full bachelor's degree.

The recruitment process follows a multi-stage structure: Physical Measurement and Endurance Test (PM&ET) first, followed by a Written Examination, and then a Trade Test or Typing Test as applicable to the specific post. The PM&ET carries no marks but is qualifying in nature, meaning failure at that stage removes a candidate from the process entirely. The final merit list is prepared on the basis of written examination and trade/typing test scores, along with any applicable NCC bonus marks. Given that this is a permanent government job in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the competition is expected to be significant relative to the vacancies available.

The data matters, but there are some ground-level realities about this recruitment that candidates often overlook:

How Competitive Is This?

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a Union Territory with a limited resident population, which means the eligible candidate pool for reserved ST vacancies is comparatively small. However, the general category vacancies are open to all Indian citizens, and given the permanent government job status along with island-specific allowances, the actual applicant count from across India can be substantially large relative to available seats.

For the Constable (Executive) post alone, 155 tentative vacancies are listed, but 21 of those from both the UR and OBC categories are horizontally reserved for women. The competition at the Sub-Inspector level will be notably intense since vacancies there are far fewer in number and the post carries Level-6 pay. Candidates with relevant preparation in GK, general aptitude, and computer knowledge who can also clear the physical standards comfortably are the ones most likely to make the cut.

Who Should Avoid This

Candidates uncomfortable with island life or those unable to relocate should think carefully before applying. The notification is explicit that selected candidates can be posted anywhere in the A&N Islands or even outside these islands as per the Appointing Authority. The physical endurance test is eliminatory, not just a formality. Candidates who underestimate the fitness requirement and apply without adequate preparation tend to waste an application cycle. For posts requiring specific driving licences (most posts do), ensure the licence is valid and matches the required category before applying; this is verified at PM&ET itself.

Before You Apply

Several posts in this recruitment require verified experience that predates the closing date. If your experience certificate, NTC/NAC certificate, GP Rating certificate, or professional licence is dated after 17 May 2026, it will not be accepted. This is an important cutoff that catches many candidates off guard. Similarly, OBC certificate validity is limited to those issued between 01/06/2023 and 31/05/2026 for this recruitment. Check your certificate dates before filling the form.

Also, the post preference system here is binding. Once you add your posts in order of preference and submit the application, the preference is treated as final. Think carefully about which posts you are genuinely qualified for and which ones you would actually want, because being allocated your second or third preference can happen depending on merit, and you cannot switch after submission.
