SSC CGL 2026 notification is out for approximately 12,256 vacancies across Group B and Group C posts under the Central Government.

Major posts include:

  • Assistant Section Officer (CSS, IB, Railways, MEA)
  • Inspector of Income Tax (CBDT)
  • Inspector (Central Excise, Preventive Officer, Examiner - CBIC)
  • Assistant Audit Officer / Assistant Accounts Officer
  • Tax Assistant, Auditor, UDC, Postal Assistant
  • Junior Statistical Officer, Sub Inspector (CBI, NIA, NCB)

Applications close on 22 June 2026.

The single most important thing candidates must understand upfront: Tier-I is only a screening round. Final merit depends entirely on Tier-II. Every hour spent over-preparing for Tier-I at the cost of Tier-II is a strategic error.

Most Demanded Posts in SSC CGL

Based on candidate preference patterns, the following posts consistently attract the highest demand:

  • ASO (CSS) - Delhi posting, structured promotion path to Under Secretary
  • Inspector of Income Tax - Field posting, visible authority, fast-track departmental exams
  • Tax Assistant (CBDT/CBIC) - High volume of vacancies, desk-based work
  • Auditor (C&AG) - Stable, lower transfer pressure compared to tax departments
  • JSO - Niche post requiring statistics background, relatively lower competition among eligible candidates

Posts Without Physical Test

Most SSC CGL posts do not require physical or medical tests. Only the following posts have mandatory physical standards:

  • Inspector (Central Excise / Examiner / Preventive Officer) - CBIC
  • Inspector and Sub-Inspector - Central Bureau of Narcotics
  • Sub Inspector - CBI
  • Sub Inspector - NIA
  • Sub-Inspector / JIO - Narcotics Control Bureau

Every other post - ASO, Tax Assistant, UDC, Auditor, Accountant, JSO, Postal Assistant, etc. - has no physical test requirement.

If physical fitness is a concern, you can safely apply and simply avoid giving high preference to the posts listed above.

Biggest Mistakes That Cancel SSC CGL Selection

These are errors that lead to permanent disqualification with no recourse:

  1. Degree not declared by 01.08.2026. Processing by the university is not enough. Result must be officially declared.
  2. Category certificate invalid at DV. OBC candidates must not be in creamy layer as on closing date. EWS certificate must be valid for FY 2026-27 based on income for FY 2025-26. Wrong format certificates are rejected.
  3. Not submitting post preference on time. After Tier-II, SSC opens an online preference form. If you miss the window, you are excluded from allocation entirely. No second chance.
  4. Failing physical test for preferred post. If allotted a post with physical/medical requirements and you fail, you will not be shifted to another post. Your candidature ends.

Tier-I Is the Screening Round

Subject Questions Marks Sectional Timer
Reasoning 25 50 15 min
General Awareness 25 50 15 min
Quantitative Aptitude 25 50 15 min
English 25 50 15 min
Total 100 200 1 hour
  • Negative marking: 0.50 per wrong answer
  • Bilingual (Hindi + English) except English section
  • Sectional timer: Once a section's time runs out, it closes. No going back.

Separate cut-offs for:

  • AAO posts
  • JSO / Statistical Investigator
  • All other posts

Tier-I only determines who advances to Tier-II. Its marks do not count toward final ranking.

Tier-II Is the Real Exam

Paper-I (Compulsory for All)

Conducted in two sessions on the same day.

Session-I (2 hours 15 minutes)

Section Subject Questions Marks Time
I-A Mathematical Abilities 30 90 30 min
I-B Reasoning 30 90 30 min
II-A English 45 135 40 min
II-B General Awareness 25 75 20 min
III Computer Knowledge Test 20 60 15 min

Session-II (15 minutes)

Section Test Duration
IV Data Entry Speed Test 15 min

Negative marking: 1 mark per wrong answer in Sections I, II, and III.

You must qualify every section independently. Qualifying marks:

Category Minimum
UR 30%
OBC / EWS 25%
SC/ST/PwBD 20%

What Happens If You Fail DEST?

DEST is qualifying. If you fail, you are eliminated regardless of your written score.

Maximum error percentage allowed:

Category Max Errors
UR 20%
OBC / EWS 25%
SC/ST/PwBD 30%

PwBD-OH candidates can get DEST exemption with a medical certificate from a Civil Surgeon, except for posts where Computer Proficiency or DEST is specifically prescribed.

CKT and DEST - Higher Standards for Certain Posts

For posts where Computer Proficiency is prescribed (ASO in CSS, MEA, AFHQ, Inspector CBIC, Postal Assistant, etc.), both CKT and DEST will have higher qualifying cut-offs compared to other posts.

For posts where DEST is prescribed (Tax Assistant CBDT, Tax Assistant CBIC, Sub-Inspector CBN), higher DEST standards apply.

This means you could qualify DEST for general posts but still fail for Tax Assistant if you don't meet the higher benchmark.

Paper-II (Statistics) - JSO and Statistical Investigator Only

Subject Questions Marks Duration
Statistics 100 200 2 hours

Negative marking: 0.50 per wrong answer.

Paper-III (Finance & Economics) - AAO Only

Part Subject Marks
A Finance and Accounts 80
B Economics and Governance 120
Total 200

100 questions, 2 hours. Negative marking: 0.50 per wrong answer.

How Final Merit Is Built

Post Group Merit Formula
AAO / AAO Section I + II (Paper-I) + Paper-III marks
JSO / Stat Investigator Section I + II (Paper-I) + Paper-II marks
Posts with DEST prescribed Section I + II, qualifying CKT (normal) + DEST (higher)
Posts with Computer Proficiency Section I + II, qualifying CKT (higher) + DEST (higher)
All other posts Section I + II, qualifying CKT + DEST (normal)

Tier-I marks are not used.

One Wrong Preference Can Ruin Allocation

After Tier-II results, SSC opens an online post preference form. This is where the recruitment outcome is actually decided for you.

Here is what happens:

  • You rank every post and department you want, in order of preference.
  • SSC allocates based on merit + preference.
  • Once you receive your highest available preference, you are locked in.
  • If that post requires physical/medical standards and you fail, your candidature ends. No reallocation.

Candidates who do not submit preferences within the deadline are excluded entirely. SSC will not reopen the window.

The notification states:

"The option/preference once exercised by the candidates will be treated as FINAL and IRREVERSIBLE."

Competition Snapshot

  • SSC CGL typically attracts 15-30 lakh applications across categories.
  • With 12,256 vacancies, the overall ratio is better than many previous years.
  • Group C posts (Tax Assistant, UDC, Auditor) form the bulk of vacancies and attract the highest volume.
  • Group B posts (ASO, Inspector) have fewer seats but higher salary, so competition per seat is intense.
  • Candidates qualifying Tier-I but not performing well in Tier-II often miss selection by narrow margins.

The exam is conducted in multiple shifts with score normalization.

Application Process - Step by Step

Step 1: Go to https://ssc.gov.in. Click "Login or Register."

Step 2: Create One-Time Registration (OTR) on the new website. Old OTR from ssc.nic.in does not work.

Provide:

  • Aadhaar number (recommended for authentication) or alternate documents
  • Name, DOB, parents' names exactly as in Matriculation certificate
  • Mobile number and email (OTP verification)
  • Category, nationality, disability details
  • Address

You must complete OTR within 14 days or your data is deleted.

Step 3: Login and click "Apply" under CGL 2026.

Step 4: Fill exam-specific fields:

  • Educational qualification
  • ESM / age relaxation
  • Exam centre preferences (three centres, same region)
  • Medium for exam
  • JSO / AAO applicability
  • Scribe requirement (if PwBD)

Step 5: Capture live photograph via webcam or mobile app. Upload scanned signature (JPEG, 10-20 KB, 6 cm x 2 cm).

Step 6: Preview everything. Check every field.

Step 7: Submit and pay fee.

Step 8: Take printout for records.

Application Rejection Triggers

These cause automatic rejection with no appeal:

  • Fee not received by SSC
  • Photo captured from a pre-existing photograph (unless Aadhaar-authenticated)
  • Blurred or miniature signature (unless Aadhaar-authenticated)
  • Multiple applications with different registration numbers
  • Name or DOB mismatch with Matriculation certificate (discovered at DV)

Application Correction Window

29 June - 01 July 2026

Correction Charge
First Rs 200
Second Rs 500
  • Only for candidates whose original application + fee was received
  • Maximum two corrections allowed
  • After window closes, no changes accepted under any circumstances
  • SSC will not entertain requests via post, fax, email, or in person

Friction Points Most Candidates Overlook

Live Photo Capture

The application module captures your photo in real-time. There is no option to upload a saved image (unless Aadhaar-authenticated).

Requirements:

  • Plain background, good lighting
  • No spectacles, cap, mask
  • Camera at eye level, full frontal face
  • Face must fill the designated frame

If you take a photo of your existing passport photo, the application is rejected.

Aadhaar Authentication Advantage

Candidates who authenticate via Aadhaar during OTR:

  • Will not face rejection for photo or signature issues
  • Do not need physical photo ID or passport photos at the exam centre
  • Have simpler centre entry

Non-Aadhaar candidates must reach the exam centre 2 hours early with two passport photos and original photo ID.

Exam Centre Selection

You must choose three centres within the same SSC region. No cross-region selection.

SSC reserves the right to cancel a centre, add new ones, or divert candidates. No change requests are entertained after submission.

Server Rush on Last Day

SSC explicitly states it will not be responsible if candidates cannot submit due to heavy server load near the deadline. Apply well before 22 June 2026.

Work Reality After Selection

All India Service Liability: Every post. You may be posted anywhere in India.

Transfers: Departments like CBDT, CBIC, and Posts have periodic transfer cycles. CSS officers are generally Delhi-based but transfers to attached/subordinate offices are possible.

State Cadre posts (AAO/AAO State): You will be allocated to a state based on vacancies, merit, and preference. You may need to acquire regional language proficiency for confirmation.

Probation: Most posts have a probation period. AAO/AAO candidates must clear the Subordinate Audit/Accounts Service Examination for confirmation.

Promotion timeline: CSS cadre has a relatively structured promotion path (ASO → SO → US). CBDT/CBIC have departmental exam routes. Group C promotions are slower and vacancy-dependent.
