Eligibility: Important Conditions for Candidates

Application Fee

The examination fee is Rs.1,180 for each CBT Examination Group a candidate applies for. This comprises Rs.1,000 plus 18% GST, along with any applicable payment gateway charges. Candidates applying for multiple CBT groups should therefore account for the fee separately for each group.
*One important point candidates should understand carefully is that KRCL has divided the 12 posts into 9 separate CBT Examination Groups. If a candidate applies for posts belonging to more than one CBT group, the examination fee must be paid separately for each group, rather than as a single fee for the entire application.

Note: If a candidate qualifies for age relaxation under more than one provision, only the single relaxation that provides the greater benefit will be granted and relaxations from different categories or grounds cannot be combined or added together. It is also important to note that SC, ST, and OBC-NCL candidates who apply against Unreserved (UR) vacancies are not eligible for the corresponding category-based age relaxation for that application. Educational Qualification

Selection Process

KRCL follows 3 different selection pathways, depending on the post applied for. The Computer-Based Test (CBT) is a common component across all three selection routes, with the subsequent stages varying according to the post. See the details below:

1. For Section Controller, Station Master, and Assistant Loco Pilot, the selection process consists of the CBT, followed by a Computer-Based Aptitude Test or OMR-based Aptitude Test, then Document Verification and Medical Examination. Candidates who qualify in the CBT are shortlisted for the Aptitude Test at up to eight times the notified vacancies for these posts. The final merit is prepared with 70% weightage for CBT marks and 30% for Aptitude Test marks. Therefore, candidates need to perform well in both stages, as a strong CBT score alone doesn't ensure final selection.

2. For Senior Section Engineer, Junior Engineer, Goods Train Manager, Commercial Supervisor, Technician-III, and ESTM-III, the selection process moves directly from the CBT to Document Verification and Medical Examination. There is no separate aptitude test or intermediate stage for these posts.

3. For Track Maintainer, an additional Physical Efficiency Test (PET) is conducted between Document Verification and Medical Examination. Candidates must first carry a sandbag for 100 metres within 2 minutes without putting it down. Only those who clear this stage proceed to the timed 1,000-metre run. Failure in the weight-carrying test results in elimination before the running test.
The CBT carries negative marking, with 1 mark deducted for every incorrect answer, regardless of whether the question carries 1 or 3 marks.
Note: The minimum qualifying marks in CBT for Group C posts are 50% for UR/EWS and 40% for OBC-NCL, SC, and ST candidates. For Track Maintainer, the qualifying requirement is 40% for UR/EWS and 30% for OBC-NCL, SC, and ST candidates, with an additional 2% relaxation for eligible PwBD candidates.

*The technical component of the CBT varies significantly by post, so candidates should prepare according to the specific examination group they are applying for. For Junior Engineer (Mechanical), the technical section carries 30 out of 100 marks, while ESTM-III has 20 technical marks and Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) has 40 technical marks.
